Lanson Green Label Organic Brut Champagne

Tasting Notes
Lanson Green Label Organic Champagne expresses the qualities and uniqueness of its terroir to the full.  Like all our Champagnes, this wine is mostly composed of Pinot Noir for a perfect balance between vitality and finesse. It does not undergo malolactic fermentation to preserve the original purity and freshness of the grape. After three years in the cellars, the Champagne, characterised by its mineral purity, is elegant and very aromatic.

To the eye, it is rich amber in colour with fine, uniform bubbles. The nose expresses a deep minerality and fresh fruits such as apricot and grapefruit, with underlying notes of exotic spices. After swirling, notes such as cinnamon and peach become apparent. The palate is dense, dynamic and promising. Notes of exotic fruits such as pomegranate and papaya develop with a long and spicy finish.

Ideal as an aperitif, it can also accompany more elaborate fish or grilled dishes.

Philosophy
Lanson Green Label Champagne is produced using organic grapes grown exclusively on an estate vineyard at Verneuil in the heart of the Marne valley
Committed to organic cultivation for many years, the vineyard is dedicated to protecting the ecosystem and respects the balance between soil, plants and humans. It is part of The House of Lanson's overall approach to respecting the environment and follows a strict ecological logic – the bottles are lightweight and the labels made of recycled paper.
Inspired by nature, Lanson has chosen to combine the colour green with its distinctive emblem, the Lanson cross.

Certification
The vineyard's vines have been awarded the labels AGRICULTURE BIOLOGIQUE in France, BIOSUISSE in Switzerland and Demeter (an independent label). These labels are considered among the strictest in Europe
Lanson Organic Champagne is certified AB and Biosuisse by ECOCERT FR-BIO-01
Lanson-BCC started producing the wine in 2012 once the cellars were certified. The grapes and the plot have held the ECOCERT certification for a number of years (before 2010)

ORGANIC VITICULTURE

Organic viticulture represents 1.4% of the vineyards in Champagne.

Jermone Courgey the organic vineyard manager says of the organic vineyards: “"We're pioneers here, we're experimenting"

5 steps to good soil:

  • No compaction, no machines etc
  • The soil is covered all year round
  • No ploughing
  • Biodiversity - combine many plants
  • What the soil produces, you leave it in place

The focus is on accumulating carbon in the soil, reducing pollution and heavy tools.  The whole concept revolves around promoting the fungal food chain with fungal dominated compost and compost tea – we are trying to add 40 tonnes of fresh organic material per acre

Transition period takes 5-10 years to get soil and vines back into a healthy state

The vines are only sprayed once a year in later summer / early autumn when the leaves are about to fall, then the soil isn’t touched for the rest of the year.  Only copper and sulphur are used – no herbicides or pesticides

Another project is to plant bushes and trees in the vineyard to help create balance in time, the ideal it to have 50-100 trees per ha.
